Timely, and well-observed. I only wish more people would be making this argument to the likes of Grassley, Baucus, Schumer, Graham--and the candidates (Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama) who've signed on to damn China as a currency manipulator. Ironic, I think, that the very people whose interests they think they're protecting--working class Americans--are the people who are apt to suffer worst from the rising costs of imported goods. Americans have saved over $5 billion dollars in childrens clothing alone since China's accession to the WTO, I read somewhere. I once asked a currency trader who was arguing against the Schumer-Graham across-the-board punitive tarriff whether the NY senator had done the math. "Of course he's done the math," he replied. "The math is, if I push this [legislation] I pick up 20,000 votes, and if I don't, I drop 10,000."
